World War One. The 100th anniversary of America's entry into the War to End All Wars is a good time to remember a war that began when a Serbian assassin shot Archduke Ferdinand in Sarajevo. In the next five years, more than nine million soldiers had been killed, over a million of them in the infamous Battle of the Somme. The North Carolina Museum of History has mounted a remarkable exhibit which is remindful of the horror of that bloody conflict.

North Carolina got its own French chateau in 1985 when George Vanderbilt chose to build a home in the North Carolina mountains. Today a million visitors annually travel to Asheville to view the Biltmore Estate and Winery, modeled from a French Chateau and 16th-century castles in the Loire Valley of France.

The Yadkin Valley, teeming with its own wineries, is reviewed by the Wine Guys, Joe and Matt, who report on their recent visit to several of the state's 125 wineries. Fall is a perfect time to make your own visit, sample the fruits of the vine, and enjoy our mountain magnificience.
